A Client's Commission - A Showcase Design & Build...

The client was inspired by a double-legged coffee table she bought from me, and wanted the design enlarged to a specific size requirement.

The bespoke dining table was handmade & hand planed. Its unusual ‘picture frame’ design includes spalted beech with iroko framing, cedar double-legs, and a beech/cedar frame, crafted to allow the wood to expand naturally.

We had several chats and messages, I suggested materials and options, we discussed amendments to the coffee table design to ensure the strength and stability required in a dining table, and I shared some photos along the way as I progressed.

The client was delighted with the outcome - she now owns a truly unique piece with beautiful grain patterns and framing – a real statement piece for her home.

The table was built with 100% reclaimed woods including spalted beech, iroko, beech, and cedar (reclaimed from bed slatting!). The table is hand-finished with 2 coats of clear matt Fiddes hard wax oil to protect and preserve the wood and give resistance to spills and moisture.

If you would like to commission a piece for your own ‘showcase’, please get in touch to discuss your requirements and to receive a quote.

The use of reclaimed wood is what first attracted me to his furniture… having seen what he has achieved with the designs and love that he puts into his work, I bought 2 pieces and intend to commission 2 more minimum… watch this space!! ?

...your work is amazing. I really really love it!!

A Passion for Wood

I am passionate about reclaimed wood and its amazing imperfections, all of which add character and life to the pieces I make; it's at the heart of what I do.

Each piece is unique and handmade by me, entirely of reclaimed wood*, in my North-Somerset workshop.

I love how this adds to the pieces I make, and the visible history of the wood.

It takes longer and, frankly, isn't as easy as buying perfect timber ready to work with, but I believe the results and sustainability are worth it.

Dave involved us in every aspect of the design and was very obliging when it came to incorporating our suggestions. The finished tabletop is exquisite and unique.

My woodworking began as a young boy when my Dad gave me my own saw and let me cut things up! I've been interested ever since.

Wood is an amazing, beautiful, strong and flexible product, but there's a huge amount of it already felled and in circulation - so why cut it down if you don't have to.

My approach to wood

Helping the environment one piece at a time

Making (and buying) pieces made from reclaimed wood (including storm damaged trees) supports sustainable practices reducing my (and your) carbon footprint.

It’s been estimated each fully-grown tree’s annual CO2 offset is 21.8 to 31.5 kg CO2, meaning 1 tonne of CO2 needs 31-46 trees to offset. See the data.

Wood is an amazing, beautiful, strong, and flexible product, but there is a huge amount already felled and in circulation.

I aim to source all my wood as locally as I can, using wood recycling centres in Weston-Super-Mare and Bristol. I prioritise local community interest companies focused on providing work-based training for people struggling with addiction, mental health issues and long-term unemployment.

*Reclaimed wood includes storm damaged trees, which adds to the excitement of what might be available at any given time. Occasionally I need to use non-reclaimed wood to finish or create a certain piece; if so, I aim to source materials from suppliers of FSC and PEFC certified timber with Chain of Custody (COC) certification.

If an item is in stock please allow 5 working-days for dispatch. Where a piece is made to order please allow 5 to 6 weeks between confirmation of the order and completion.

Depending on the piece and style it could take longer, but I will always give an estimate at time of ordering. If you have a particular deadline or tighter timescale, please let me know - I will always help where I can.

Payment...

I accept payment by bank transfer for stock items, and for deposit and final payments for made-to-order and commissions pieces.

I will request payment for orders prior to dispatch, and ship items when funds are received.

Pricing...

All prices are quoted inclusive of VAT. I price pieces based on the materials, time, and craftsmanship involved.

Using reclaimed wood can take longer and is not as easy as buying perfect timber ready to work with, or simply buying a machine-made import.

I believe the results and sustainability are worth it.

Pieces To Order or Commissions...

I'm always happy to discuss and understand your needs to design and build a piece for you to your requirements.

Once we agree a commission/order, I request a 35% non-refundable deposit to secure it and start creating your piece.

The final payment will be requested 2 weeks before dispatch.

What you can expect...

My passion for reclaimed wood means your piece(s) may include any, or all of screw and nail holes, open grain, saw, tool, and hammer marks, scuffs, cracking, traces of previous paint or rust marks, and all kinds of charming details that give each piece it's unique character.

Delivery...

I arrange delivery in agreement with you, or you can collect the item if you prefer.

I always aim to use a professional carrier, and only recover my costs.

In some cases I can deliver personally.

14-Day Returns...

If you are not delighted with your purchase, I offer a 14-day return policy.

The item must be undamaged, in its original packaging, and the cost of return is not covered.
